Puya clava-herculis

The Cajas National Park is located just outside the UNESCO world Heritage Site, the city of Cuenca in Ecuador. Although no llamas were seen, many Puya clava-herculis, arguably one of the most impressive plants in the park, were spotted. The foliage of this bromeliad (member of the pineapple family Bromeliaceae), are covered in razor sharp barbs.  The flower spike is striking, often reaching the height of over one metre (1), with green to blue flowers and with vivid orange anthers.
